JULY 16, 2008   MRS. MOOREHEAD

Welcome to my class! I am so excited for this coming school year. I have received two postcards from new students and look forward to receiving yours as well. Remember I enclosed a postcard in your 2nd grade Report Card. Check your mail after you register for school! I am taking two Masters classes this summer, therefore I check my e-mail approximately once a week. Please e-mail me any questions you may have.

Reading

  • Your child will need to read 100 minutes per week just as was expected in 2nd grade. Your child receives a grade for this. Also, home reading impacts other grades. The more practice your child gets, the better he or she understands all subjects.
  • Parents, you often wonder how to prepare your child for 3rd grade. Have your child READ,READ, READ this summer!

Math

  • Just as you experienced in 1st and 2nd grades, you will have homework almost every day in Math. Every 5 lessons there is a math fact test and a written test. The homework prepares your child for this.

Language

  • We will be doing a lot of writing this year. Our main focus will be to edit and organize writing. Writing will be on the ISAT in March.
  • Parents, an easy way to prepare your child is to ask him or her to tell you about an experience from that day or the previous weekend. The writing doesn't have to be comprehensive. Just write for 10 minutes and talk about the writing (complete sentence, end marks, capitalization).

Spelling

  • Your child will have a Spelling Journal at school this year. Word Wall words will be added, as well as Spelling words, and frequently misspelled words. This is a resource I will encourage your child to use often when writing. My mantra is that we can't always know everything, but should know where to find the answer!

Science

  • We will begin the year with a visitor shortly after school begins! Can you guess?
  • I will supply a purple Take Home Folder and an envelope stapled on the inside of it.This folder will house the vocabulary words and concepts for the Science tests. I usually know the date of the test prior to beginning the unit. The vocabulary cards are to stay in the envelope so they can be used at school and at home. In third grade I begin to teach children how to study for and how to take standardized tests. This is a skill that is necessary throughout your a person's entire educational career.

Other

  • In early October the children will take a field trip to Lowell Park in Dixon for Outdoor Stewardship Days. This is a fantastic, free field trip that enhances our Science Curriculum.

Other

  • Anyone who prints this web page and returns it to me during the first week of school may choose a prize from the prize box.
  • Also, your child will receive an Assignment Notebook. If the Assignment Notebook has been signed every day in a week, your child will get to choose a prize from my box at the end of the week. The Assignment Notebook is a new concept for your child. Please support your child by checking it daily and assisting your child with his/her responsibilities. Your child will still need your guidance.
